Police Community Support
Officers (PCSOs)
As a PCSO you'll be on the front line working alongside police
officers, providing a visible presence on the City streets.
You will be assigned to a particular area on Bishopsgate or Snow
Hill division, where you will get to know the local community and
become involved in gathering intelligence and providing
reassurance. PCSOs also take crime reports, statements, issue
certain fixed penalty notices and are the eyes and ears of their
police colleagues. Training lasts for 11 weeks and your time
will be split between the Force Learning and Development Centre and
the City University, where you will be awarded credits towards a
foundation degree in policing. Your training will consist of
law input, practical exercises and a tutored phase working
alongside a police officer on the Professional Development
Unit.
Some of the powers:
- Detain an offender for up to 30 minutes until police assistance
arrives.
- Confiscate alcohol, cigarettes and tobacco from young
persons
- Seize vehicles used to cause harassment alarm and
distress.
- Issue fixed penalty notices for dog fouling, litter, cycling on
footpath, graffiti and fly-posting.
