Alcohol Control Zone -
Middlesex Street Estate
Residents of the Middlesex Street Estate may have noticed some
new signage has arrived. An Alcohol Control Zone approved by the
City of London came into effect on 1st January 2008.
Following the prioritisation at the Portsoken Ward panel
meeting, Ward Officers from Bishopsgate proposed that the zone be
introduced to combat problems caused by the high levels of street
drinking in the locality.
The presence of the street drinkers and the associated anti
social behaviour that occurred including urination and defecation,
led to the intimidation of the local residents and businesses, in
turn having a detrimental effect on their quality of life.
The area has been designated by the local authority and provides
the Police and PCSO’s with extra powers to prevent people drinking
alcohol within this zone when necessary.
It will not be an offence to drink alcohol in this area but
failure to comply with an officer’s requirement in respect of
public drinking, or surrender of alcohol, without a good excuse,
will result in the issuing of a fixed penalty notice. If the person
still refuses to comply, they may be arrested and prosecuted.
An Alcohol Control Zone is not intended to eradicate all street
drinking, but is a useful resource for Officers to use, to assist
them to meet the demands of the Community.
