Operation Nova

This operation in conjunction was designed to combat crime and anti-social behaviour in and around the St Paul’s Cathedral / Paternoster Square area by A/PS Dean Stanhope (Castle Baynard) and A/PS Dilliway (Bread Street). We have purchased a number of postcards depicting City of London Police Officers around the St Paul’s area; the rear of the postcard contains a message in nine languages, warning tourists, visitors and business workers of pickpockets in the area. This is an excellent way to be able to make contact, with that very hard to reach part of the community, tourists. This was an excellent way to be able to make contact, with that very hard to reach part of the community, tourists.  In 2005 nearly 10,000 postcards were issued to members of the public, and crime was reduced by 35%.

Operation to prevent the advertising of prostitute services

Concerns were raised by members of the community about the proliferation of prostitute advertising cardS, which were being left and displayed in public telephone boxes, particularly in the Holborn / Fleet Street areas. As a result of this, efforts were made by the ward policing team to target the perpetrators, arrest them, and deal as appropriate. There have to date been in excess of thirty arrests and a substantial amount of intelligence gathered. The number of cards being left has been substantially reduced.

Smithfield Christmas road traffic campaign

This campaign runs each year during the last market trading week before Christmas. It is designed chiefly to keep the market roads free and running, thus preventing disorder. The market was initially designed in the Victorian era for the use of horses and carts, and although the road system has been improved over the years, it is still not sufficiently robust to cater for Christmas, when trade increases many times over. The overspill of vehicles has been known in the past to cause traffic jams up to and beyond King's Cross (North) and Blackfriars Bridge (South). The campaign is resource intensive and involves the police preventing the blockage of the corners on the market site, thereby ensuring the flow of traffic.
