Overview & brief history
Aldersgate ward is a large and diverse area situated in the
north east sector of Snow Hill Division. It is bounded by
Aldersgate Street, Beech Street, Noble Street, Angel Street, King
Edward Street and Montague Street. It contains the residential
population centre of the division on the Barbican Estate.
The Barbican Estate has residential, educational, leisure and
business centres. The residential population comprises 2003
residencies, and a population of approximately 5000 in 20 blocks,
or houses as they are known. The main residential group is known as
the Barbican Association, which disseminates information down
through the house groups.
The estate now has a new police office which is located at the
base of Shakespeare Tower, and is staffed Monday to Friday
The Barbican Arts and Leisure Centre houses theatres, cinemas,
concert halls, art galleries, library and exhibition halls. A
variety of concerts and exhibitions are held throughout the year.
Within the Estate is the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and
the City of London School for Girls. A good relationship has been
formed with these educational centres and constant liaison is
maintained. Nursery’s located within the estate are regularly
visited by the ward officers and PCSO’s.

Alban Gate, 125 London Wall. Has recently been fully occupied by
J.P. Morgan.

There are 3 city livery companies on the ward and these are
Ironmongers Hall, Plaisterers Hall and Barber / Surgeons Hall.
