Overview & brief history

Billingsgate Ward is found within the boundary defined by the river Thames, Lovat Lane, Fenchurch Street, Mark Lane and Sugar Quay.

A cross section of premises includes banks, offices, churches, sandwich bars & restaurants, public houses and livery halls.

Some buildings of note are Plantation Place in Fenchurch Street, Minster Court in Mincing Lane and the Northern and Shell Building owned by Express Newspapers in Lower Thames Street.Historical locations include the Old Billingsgate Fish Market, Customs House, Sugar Quay, the Watermen and Lightermens Hall, all of which have close connections with the river. Centennium House in Lower Thames Street has Roman baths within their basement foundations. St Dunstan’s Church in St Dunstan’s Hill, having been partly destroyed in World War II, is now a peaceful garden.
