Overview & brief history

The Ward of Castle Baynard is an irregular shaped ward, which nestles in the very heart of the City of London. Its boundaries consist of Paternoster Square / St Peter’s Hill in the East, New Fetter Lane to the North, The Temple and Temple Gardens to the West and Blackfriars and the River Thames to the South.

The ward is a primarily a business and retail area and is dominated by St Paul’s Cathedral as well as a host of other large business organisations. All of these premises sit hand in glove with restaurants, coffee shops, pubs and wine bars alike, as well as other retail premises. St Paul’s Cathedral is a very popular location for both visitors and the staff of surrounding buildings, who, during the summer months, enjoy the ‘alfresco’ street environment.

There are some major development projects that loom close. The current main sites are a four star hotel in Carter Lane and the new London HQ of the Church of Scientology in Queen Victoria Street. Further information about these projects will be supplied in future Castle Baynard Ward profile updates.

Annual events on the Ward are the London Marathon in April, Lord Mayors Show in November and Christmas and New Year's Eve Celebrations.

High profile premises located within the ward include, KPMG, Freshfields, JP Morgan, Unilever, Office of Fair Trading, St Brides, Reuters, Bridewell Theatre, HMS President, C.Hoare & Co, Hotel Grand Plaza in New Bridge Street, and the Patent Office.
