Housing benefit - new claim

The Benefits Service is part of the Department of Children's and Community Services.

We pay housing benefit to people on low income who have difficulty in making their rent payments. You do not have to be getting other social security benefits before you can claim housing benefit.

You can make a claim for housing benefit with us if you pay rent to the City of London or pay rent to a private landlord or housing association and live within the 'Square Mile'.

If you are claiming both housing benefit and council tax benefit you only have to fill out one form.

If you pay rent to the City of London but live outside the 'Square Mile' in the London Boroughs of Hackney, Islington, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark and Tower Hamlets your claim for council tax benefit must be made to the council in whose area you live.

If you are not sure whether you are entitled to claim housing benefit or council tax benefit you can find out more about these benefits on our FAQs pages.

Click here to see our Benefits Calculator.

If you want to speak to us directly our details are on the contacts page.
