City WiFi
The City of London and The Cloud have partnered to bring wireless
networking to London's Square Mile, giving users greater freedom to
use wireless when accessing internet applications on the move and
providing City businesses with the ability to securely expand their
corporate IT infrastructure using WiFi.
The provision of this technology
means City workers and visitors will be able to use wireless
broadband to work more effectively: staying in touch with
their office using hand-held and laptop devices while on the
move.
The Cloud will use state of the art switched mesh architecture,
installed on street furniture, such as lamp posts and street signs,
allowing City workers and visitors with WiFi-enabled devices to
access the Internet in streets and in open spaces. Initially, the
network will cover the area around Guildhall Yard but will
subsequently be expanded, with 95% outdoor coverage across the
City of London by the end of December 2006.
Any service provider will be able use this new WiFi network to
provide Internet-based services to its customers. Supported
applications include:
- high speed Internet access
- rich email access
- music, video and other entertainment services
- voice over WiFi services
