The original source for the statistical data is the Annual
Business Enquiry (ABI) from the Office for National Statistics
(ONS), a business survey which collects both employment and
financial information across various sectors and geographical
regions of the country.
This data is available from the following website but requires
an annual subscription: www.nomisweb.co.uk

data available by industrial sector?
Yes. City Research Focus, January 2008 covers
employment by industrial sector for the City, as well as for Canary
Wharf, the City Fringe boroughs and London overall (see download

There are no official statistics that estimate GDP levels or
growth rates down to the local authority level. However,
Oxford
Economics has carried out its own study on our behalf and now
produces forecasts twice a year for us.

The Census of Population undertaken every ten years by the
Office of National Statistics (ONS) is the key source of data. In
particular, the ONS published its Origin-Destination statistics in
CD form between 2003 and 2004 for the last census in 2001. This is
available from the ONS free of charge.

The best official guide to the number of enterprises in any area
is looking at the number of VAT registrations. The number of
VAT-registered enterprises at the end of 2004, as well as those
registering and deregistering for VAT in 2004 (and in previous
years) is available from the
City Business Library.
There is also a breakdown by industry. The figures do not give a
complete picture as there are a few VAT-exempt sectors and a number
of ‘one person’ businesses operating below the threshold for VAT
registration.

Who are the biggest
employers in the City?
There are no official statistics. Most of the biggest employers
are banks such as Deutsche Bank, UBS, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs,
Merrill Lynch, and Barclays. The largest non-bank employers include
BT Group (telecoms), KPMG (accountancy) and Linklaters (legal
services).
A list of the largest foreign banks (with various details) in
London as a whole was included in
The Banker
magazine in November 2004 – available in the
City Business Library.
Is there a breakdown of
employees in the City by nationality?
There is no official source of data available.
However, the Census does produce ethnicity data on a workplace
basis and is available from www.statistics.gov.uk
