Where can I find information about the latest economic trends in the Square Mile?

City Economy Digest, a City of London quarterly periodical, covers economic, labour market, financial market and property trends in the Square Mile.

City Business Review, a City of London quarterly periodical, provides a broad overview of recent earnings announcements from City firms.

City Research Focus, a City of London quarterly periodical, provides various statistical information and analyses on the City of London.

How many people are working in the City of London as well as in Canary Wharf and City Fringe boroughs?

The original source for the statistical data is the Annual Business Enquiry (ABI) from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), a business survey which collects both employment and financial information across various sectors and geographical regions of the country.

This data is available from the following website but requires an annual subscription: www.nomisweb.co.uk

Can I find City employment data available by industrial sector?

Yes. City Research Focus, January 2008 covers employment by industrial sector for the City, as well as for Canary Wharf, the City Fringe boroughs and London overall (see download link above).

Is there an analysis of employment trends in the City by gender and by employment status (full time/part time breakdown) available?

Yes. City Research Focus, July 2008 covers this for the City and for each borough in the surrounding central London Business District. In addition, it gives employment in the City by both gender and sector.

What is the GDP of the City of London and how fast is it growing? How does this compare with the London economy and the UK overall?

There are no official statistics that estimate GDP levels or growth rates down to the local authority level. However, Oxford Economics has carried out its own study on our behalf and now produces forecasts twice a year for us.

What is the contribution of financial and professional business services to the City of London, Greater London and UK economies?

Oxford Economics has produced estimates for 2006 and 2007 for the contribution of financial and professional business services to Gross Value Added in the City of London, Greater London and UK economies.  An article outlining these results was published in the 2007 Research Review, January 2008.

Can I get information on the City workforce, such as age structure, social and economic grouping, ethnicity and travel-to-work data?

The Census of Population undertaken every ten years by the Office of National Statistics (ONS) is the key source of data. In particular, the ONS published its Origin-Destination statistics in CD form between 2003 and 2004 for the last census in 2001. This is available from the ONS free of charge. www.statistics.gov.uk

City Research Focus, October 2005 features an article looking at City Employment by location of residence as well as by both location of residence and age.

In addition, Transport for London produces an annual travel report which is a compendium of statistics relating to all types of travel in London.

How many businesses are there in the City of London?

The latest figures are published in February 2008 edition of City Economy Digest.

The best official guide to the number of enterprises in any area is looking at the number of VAT registrations. The number of VAT-registered enterprises at the end of 2004, as well as those registering and deregistering for VAT in 2004 (and in previous years) is available from the City Business Library.

There is also a breakdown by industry. The figures do not give a complete picture as there are a few VAT-exempt sectors and a number of ‘one person’ businesses operating below the threshold for VAT registration.

Who are the biggest employers in the City?

There are no official statistics. Most of the biggest employers are banks such as Deutsche Bank, UBS, JP Morgan, Goldman Sachs, Merrill Lynch, and Barclays. The largest non-bank employers include BT Group (telecoms), KPMG (accountancy) and Linklaters (legal services).

A list of the largest foreign banks (with various details) in London as a whole was included in The Banker magazine in November 2004 – available in the City Business Library.

Is there a breakdown of employees in the City by nationality?

There is no official source of data available.

However, the Census does produce ethnicity data on a workplace basis and is available from www.statistics.gov.uk
