Power
Electricity is the lifeblood of any
City. EDF Energy Networks is responsible for providing
the City of London’s 350,000 workers and 8,000 residents with
enough power to support the ongoing needs of their buildings
and homes.
Within London EDF Energy Networks manages over 30,900 km of
underground network offering a supply reliability of 99.98%.
In the last few years the need for power in the City of London
has increased dramatically. The advent of high density computer
systems has led to a huge increase in the need for more power and
cooling. The City of London’s City Property Advisory and Highways
Management Teams are working closely with EDF Energy Networks to
ensure that the Square Mile is provided with sufficient power and
resilience for its current occupiers and for new buildings which
will be coming online in the future.
By 2010 EDF Energy Networks aims to have invested a total in
excess of £50million in improving their network in the City of
London. This will support security and as well as growth of power
requirements. EDF Energy Networks will also install 46km of new
cable throughout central London and eight new
transformers.
Gas
The City Property Advisory Team (CPAT) has held meetings with
The Major Energy Users Council (MEUC), Ofgem (The UK’s energy
regulator) and the DTI (Department of Trade & Industry) in
order to further discuss the volatility in the Gas Markets and the
rise in gas prices last winter. Gas prices usually have a knock on
effect on electricity prices, as many power stations are powered by
gas.
CPAT have spoken with these organisations in order to see what
measures are being put in place to improve the UK’s security of
supply, to protect against another winter of high gas prices and
market uncertainty. From recent meetings held, it has been stated
that while Gas prices are likely to remain high for this coming
winter, measures put in place by Ofgem, such as the publishing of
information on the level of gas flows coming into the UK, will
eventually lead to stabilization in the marketplace. The impact of
new gas pipelines that will allow the UK to import gas from Norway
and Holland, and the building of new Gas storage facilities and LNG
(Liquefied Natural Gas) plants throughout the UK will also provide
a better level of security of supply and will help to keep prices
at a reasonable level.
