Commercial waste - clinical waste disposal

For business premises which either specialise in healthcare treatments or have medical facilities on site, a charge is made for the clinical waste collection and disposal service. The current charges are:

  • Heavy duty yellow sack £8.00 each plus VAT (minimum charge of £15.00 applies)
  • 1 litre sharps container £4.00 each plus VAT (minimum charge of £15.00 applies)
  • 4 litre sharps container £6.00 each plus VAT (minimum charge of £15.00 applies)
  • 7 litre sharps container £8.75 each plus VAT (minimum charge of £15.00 applies)

Collections can be arranged on a regular basis, eg Friday morning, or on an ad hoc basis by telephone for a collection the next day. The service operates Monday to Friday between 8.00am and 12.00 noon. Each time a collection is made full containers are replaced with empty ones.

Business users of the service will be asked to complete a form called a Waste Transfer Note at the commencement of the collection service and annually thereafter. This document is required under Section 34 of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, it details the types and quantities of waste to be collected and also how they will handled. Service users will need to keep a copy of this form on file as it may need to be produced it as part of any audits or inspections undertaken.

The collected waste is sealed into UN approved containers for transport. These containers are then taken to Western Riverside, Waste Transfer Station, where they are sent for final disposal by incineration.

The City of London cannot collect pharmaceutical waste, eg medicines or tablets, any such waste should be returned to a dispensing chemist for disposal. Waste from laboratory cultures cannot be collected by the Corporation of London as this also requires specialist disposal.

The City of London does not provide a feminine hygiene bin exchange service, this waste can only be collected by the City of London if it is contained in yellow sacks.

For more information about the service please contact the Waste Collection Team on 020 7606 3110 extension 2070 or by email waste.collection@cityoflondon.gov.uk.
