Commercial waste - collection

Collection times

The PDF link below will take you to a list of scheduled waste collection times for all streets in the City of London. Waste should be placed out for collection no more than 30 minutes prior to the scheduled collection time and should be in tied bags, with cardboard flattened where possible. Waste should be placed directly outside your own premises or in the storage chamber provided at your building.

These are the times we aim to make collections, but times may vary slightly due to traffic conditions.

When using this list of collection times you should be aware that if you are in a building where skips or wheeled containers are used the collection times shown on the pdf file are not applicable.

Commercial waste collection

The City of London offers a commercial waste collection service – this is the collection of waste produced by business premises.

Commercial waste can take many forms and be produced in large quantities. The City of London try to keep waste off the street wherever possible and encourage business premises to use waste storage facilities wherever they exist. The City of London is able to collect waste in a range of ways from loose bags to compactor skips.

The type of waste collection service provided will depend on the quantity of waste a premises produces and the amount of storage space available. Many of the City’s newer commercial developments will include purpose built waste storage and collection areas. The use of these facilities not only keeps waste off the street but also helps to maintain the high levels of security promoted throughout the City.

Types of waste collection service:

  • Pre-paid bag and tape scheme
  • Compacted waste sacks
  • Wheeled bin collections
  • Compactor skips
  • Open top skips

Customers have the option of paying the City of London's invoice for these services online. See Paying your bill online.

Pre-paid bag scheme

Commercial waste pre-paid sackThe majority of premises in the City produce loose sacks which in most cases are collected from the highway. Every street in the City receives a minimum of two collections each day, Monday to Friday, to remove loose waste from the highway.

Any business that places waste on the highway in sacks and / or as cardboard for the City of London to collect must ensure that:

  • the waste is contained in our pre-paid sacks
  • the cardboard is flattened and secured by our pre-paid adhesive tape

The price of each sack is £1.38 plus VAT, this price includes the collection and disposal costs attributed to providing this service.

Our pre-paid sacks are sold in batches of 20, so a minimum order will cost £22.00 plus VAT. There are reduced prices for orders of large quantities as follows:

  • Less than 300 bags (1 to15 batches) - £1.38 per bag plus VAT
  • Between 300 and 500 bags (16 to 25 batches) - £1.24 per bag plus VAT
  • 500 bags and over (26 batches and over) - £1.10 per bag plus VAT

The price of each strip of pre-paid adhesive tape is £1.17 plus VAT, this price includes the collection and disposal costs attributed to providing this service.

Our strips of pre-paid adhesive tapes are sold in batches of 20, so a minimum order will cost £23.40 plus VAT.

Businesses should be aware that if they leave loose waste on the public footpath for the City of London to collect, but the waste is not contained in our pre-paid sacks or wrapped with our pre-paid adhesive tape, they could be liable for a £50.00 Fixed Penalty Notice. Continuous breach could lead to the City of London taking court-based legal action.
