What is the Clean City Awards
Scheme?
Essential though it is, waste management seldom enjoys a high
profile within a commercial organisation except when it goes wrong.
Launched in 1994, the Clean City Awards Scheme is an initiative by
the City of London Corporation designed to develop a
partnership with City businesses, both large and small, to achieve
a clean environment through good waste management.
The object of the Clean City Awards Scheme is to raise the
profile of effective waste management by recognising and rewarding
good practice and encouraging the wider adoption of the principles
of
Reduce, Reuse and Recycle. The climax for
successful companies is an annual awards ceremony and
luncheon in the Guildhall.

Judging and the awards ceremony
The City Corporation hosts an awards
ceremony each year at Mansion House. All companies having
achieved improvements in their waste management practices or
consistently maintained a high standard are presented with a
certificate to mark their success. Judging is undertaken by an
independent panel following monitoring of premises (premises
are visited usually every six to eight weeks by Cleansing
Services staff, photographic evidence may be taken to identify
improvements or shortfalls in waste management practices and a
checklist completed). Following the judging, winners and the
press are invited to Mansion House for the awards presentation
followed by a reception.
2008 Award Winners
The winners of the Clean City Awards Scheme 2008 were presented
their awards by The Lord Mayor at the annual ceremony held in the
Mansion House at the end of January.
This year’s winners of the Chairman’s Cups were Novotel London
Tower Bridge (small site) and Deutsche Bank AG London at Winchester
House (large site).
Novotel London Tower Bridge has transformed their approach to
reuse and recycling within an industry sector where this has
traditionally been difficult to achieve. The hotel has set itself a
goal to constantly strive to improve its environmental and social
performance through maintaining best practice and initiating
sustainable actions.
The types of initiatives introduced include reducing laundry
packaging, making savings of 36,000 bags per year, and encouraging
guests to recycle in their bedrooms.
The work pioneered at this hotel has now been rolled out to the
other hotels within this chain and has helped secure Green Globe
Certification.
With 3,000 Market Traders working on site at Winchester House,
Deutsche Bank AG London has been successful in achieving a cultural
shift in attitude amongst a group of staff who are usually seen as
a difficult to influence!
In fact, “Bin the Bin”, the removal of individual waste bins
replaced with communal bins, has been successfully introduced onto
the company’s Global Markets trading floors, a system that other
similar organisations are cautious to implement for their
traders.
This has helped Winchester House to double the amount of waste
they recycle over the last two years, while at the same time they
have managed to reduce the total waste they produce by about a
quarter.
This year’s Platinum Award Special Commendations were given to
Eversheds LLP at 1 Wood Street, Henderson Global Investors at 201
Bishopsgate and London Chamber of Commerce and Industry at 33 Queen
Street.
Best Practice Group
The Environmental Best Practice Group (EBPG) provides a forum
for organisations located in the City to get together to exchange
ideas on waste management, minimisation. As well as hearing from
external advisors. All organisations are welcome to attend please
contact the CCAS team if you are interested.
Minutes from previous meetings are available to download
