Since the terrorist attacks in America on September 11 2001, the
threat of terrorism has been high on the political agenda, and the
City of London with its iconic landmarks and financial institutions
could be at particular risk from extremists.
The principle responsibility for countering terrorism in the
City of London rests with the City of London Police. There are
confidential arrangements in place which include both the
Metropolitan Police Service and the British Transport Police. For
published details of the activities to be undertaken by the City of
London Police in 2008 / 09 please see their Policing Plan at

The supporting detailed Action Plan produced by the lead BCU for
the City of London Police is a restricted document and is not
published. Published information about the activities of the
British Transport Police may be found in their Strategic Plan 2008

To prevent, deter and respond to terrorist acts has been
set as a Safer City Partnership priority because of the importance
of
- The safety of residents, workers, visitors and tourists
- The City’s financial institutions
- The reputation of and international confidence in the
City.
The aim of the Partnership is to keep the vulnerability
as low as possible. The following actions have been identified
within the Partnership Plan with a view to achieving
this:
- Set up Countering Terrorism Thematic Group
- Ensuring Business Continuity in City Business
- Provide information and advice on request to City
businesses
- Increase engagement with community groups and partner agencies
to prevent radicalisation
- Improve liaison with partner agencies to enable improved
disruption and interdiction of terrorist finance networks
- Assess protective measures around vulnerable venues to minimise
impact of any initial terrorist attack and reduce collateral harm
in respect of likely secondary attacks
- Continue to raise awareness amongst City of London residents
and workers as to terrorist activity and methodology especially in
respect of hostile recognisance.
If you see any behaviour which you believe to be suspicious,
please report it to a police officer, or call the Counter
Terrorism Hotline on 0800 789 321.
