Heritage tours
Heritage tours of the cemetery have been taking place on a
regular basis for many years now. The tours have been constructed
by David McCarthy who will lead you on the walk around the
grounds.
History societies and local clubs
Tours can be arranged specifically for a club or History Society
on application or alternatively, you can book a space / spaces on
one of the regular tours that take place once a month.
Regular tours
The regular tours start at 11.00am and last for approximately
three hours. During this time you will be taken on a walking tour
of the grounds that takes in much of the 200 acre site. You will be
taken to the final resting place of people such as Bobby Moore and
Dame Anna Neagle, amongst many others, and told the stories of the
Houndsditch Murders, two Victoria Cross holders, the Siege of
Sidney Street and the Whitechapel Murders (the story of Jack the
Ripper).
It is also your opportunity to ask questions about cemeteries
and crematoria in general. (Please note: - David does not
work for the City of London Cemetery and Crematorium and therefore
cannot answer specific questions about City of London
policies).
Dates for 2008.
Saturday 16 August at 11am
Saturday 13 September at 11am.
Assemble at the Main Gate at 11.00am where you will be met and
taken to the Mausoleum of the founder of the cemetery, William
Haywood. At the Haywood memorial you will be told of the
justification for the cemetery and its early history.
Please book a place on one of the above tours by telephoning the
Bereavement Service Office 020 8530 2151.
Wheelchairs are available for those who have difficulty in
walking. Please make sure that you request use of a chair when you
make your booking.
Nature Walks
Walking tours suitable for all ages and abilities, and
conducted by the WREN Conservation and Wildlife Group will be run
throughout the year. These tours last for approximately one hour
and you are asked to meet on the lawn outside of the Gatehouse
Pantry. The walks last for approximately one hour.
Dates for 2008:
Monday 30 June at 1pm.
Access for disabled people
These walks are suitable for all individuals though we do
request that anyone with a disability lets us know beforehand. To
make the tour a worthwhile learning experience for everyone, it
would help our guide from the WREN group to know whether anyone has
any specific access needs in order to ensure that additional items
along the route can be included as necessary.
Please book a place on one of the above tours by telephoning the
Bereavement Service Office 020 8530 2151.
Further dates for 2008 will be added soon.
