The Parliamentary team is responsible for looking after the
City’s interests in Parliament with regard to all public
legislation (whether Government, Private Members’ or Ten Minute
Rule Bills proposed subordinate legislation including legislation
originating from the EU) and also all private promotions. The
subject matter dealt with relates to all City Corporation
activities and includes the Police Authority for the City and
aspects of the City Magistracy and the Irish Society. In addition,
the Office undertakes parliamentary work in collaboration with
organisations which the City Corporation supports as part of its
role of maintaining the City as the world’s leading international
financial centre. The Office’s close working relationship with the
Economic Development Office (particularly in relation to the
European Parliament and legislation initiated by the Commission)
and Mansion House are important in this regard.
For a list of the Bills in which the City Corporation has an
interest this Session, please see our
Bills of Interest page.
The Office handles relations with the Select Committees of both
Houses and provides briefing to them and to MPs and Peers for
debates as occasion demands. An intelligence gathering and City
briefing role is maintained as part of the general oversight of
proceedings at Westminster. A separate area of activity deals with
the monitoring of the GLA and its associated bodies, together with
White Papers and consultation documents produced by Government
departments.
