We are now required by law to publish two versions of the
Register of Electors – the full and edited register.
The full register
The full register lists everyone who has registered and is
entitled to vote. Anyone can come into the Electoral Services
office or their local library and ask to view a copy, under
supervision of a member of staff. They are not allowed to make
copies, only handwritten notes.
The law states that only certain people are entitled to a copy
of the full register and they can only use it for specified
purposes. These include electoral purposes, the prevention and
detection of crime and credit reference checks. It is a criminal
offence for these people to then pass the information on to anyone
else or to use the information contained for any other purpose.
The edited register
The edited register is available for anyone to purchase for any
purpose (eg marketing). This version of the register excludes all
of those people who have asked not to have their name shown on the
register that is available for general sale. You can opt out of
having your name shown on the edited register by ticking the box on
the registration form or by writing to the Electoral Services
office.
