Elections - Ward Lists

The Ward List is a register of Residents and Business voters in the City of London. There is a Ward List compiled for each of the 25 Wards and these lists are used for elections of Aldermen, Common Councilmen and Ward Officers in the City.

The qualifying date for inclusion on the Ward Lists each year is 1 September. If qualified to vote, your name will have been included on the Provisional Ward Lists which were available between 30 November and 15 December 2007. The final lists are in force from 16 February 2008 and are effective until 15 February 2009. Members of European Union Member States (other than the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus) are not entitled to vote in elections of Aldermen.

Included on the Ward Lists are:

Residents

All residents who are British, Irish Republic, Commonwealth Citizens or Citizens of other European States, aged 18 or over (or who will become 18 in the lifetime of the register, ie between 16 February one year and 15 February the following year) and who are residing in the property on the qualifying date (1 September each year) are entitled to be registered.

Partnerships and sole traders

Sole traders and equity partners of firms (without limited liability) in the City have the right to vote. These people need to be aged 18 or over (or who will become 18 in the lifetime of the register – see resident note above) and be members of the UK, Commonwealth or European Union. They need to be working at the company on the qualifying date (1 September each year) and they must physically occupy the premises.

Incorporated and unincorporated bodies

Any incorporated or unincorporated body (including banks, insurance companies, stock brokers and other financial institutions, limited liability partnerships, charities, trade associations, livery companies, churches and other religious bodies and hospital trusts) can appoint voters to take part in City elections as long as they meet certain criteria. The amount of voters to which a company is entitled is dependent on their workforce. Click here for more details on the voting system, including appointing voters and how many voters to which a company is entitled.
