City of London Register of Electors

Register of Electors

The 2008 Register of Electors was published on 3 December 2007.

The Register of Electors is a list of residents in the City of London who have registered to vote in Parliamentary, European Parliamentary and Greater London Authority elections for the Mayor and London Assembly. It is a legal requirement to be registered and each local council in the UK will compile its own Register of Electors. You cannot vote in elections if your name is not included on the Register and you may also find difficulty obtaining credit or a loan because the full register can be sold to authorised credit reference agencies who use it to confirm your identity.

Who can register to vote?

All residents who are citizens of Britain, the Republic of Ireland, the Commonwealth or European Union (EU) and are over the age of 18 are entitled to register. Commonwealth citizens must have the right of abode or have leave to enter/remain in the UK. Citizens of the EU (other than the UK, Ireland, Malta and Cyprus) may only vote in local government elections and in European Parliamentary elections if they complete an additional form.16 and 17 year olds may also register but can only vote when they become 18.

The Annual Canvass

Every year between September and December a full canvass of the register is undertaken. During this time a registration form is delivered to each household in the City which must be completed. If it is not returned, canvassers will visit properties and further reminder forms will be delivered. The updated register is published on 1 December and individuals can confirm if they are registered by contacting the Electoral Services Office on 0800 587 5537 or by inspecting it in any library in the City.

‘Rolling Registration’

Once it is published in December each year, the Register is revised on a monthly basis between January and September. If you failed to return a canvass form, are registered but your details have changed (eg you have got married) or you have recently moved to the City, you can complete a ‘rolling registration’ form, obtainable from the Electoral Services department, or by downloading a copy here.

Please only complete if you live within the Square Mile, ie the City of London itself, which is the capital's financial district.

If you live elsewhere in London, please visit www.aboutmyvote.com for a form.

Who has access to the Register of Electors?

The Register of Electors can be viewed in full or edited versions.

Contrary to popular belief a person is not automatically registered if they are paying Council Tax. The two are not linked in any way.

Jury service

If a person is over the age of 70 they are no longer eligible for jury service. On the voter registration form there is a box to be ticked informing us that you are over 70.
