Following the statutory assessment process under the Education
Act 1996, a decision is made as to whether a child requires a
Statement of Special Educational Needs and special provision. The
needs of most pupils are met in mainstream schools without a
Statutory Assessment and Statement of Special Educational Needs.
However, some children with significant learning difficulties or
disabilities may require a Statement of Special Educational
Needs.
Parents are given the opportunity to express their views and to
discuss the production of the Statement of Special Educational
Needs. If, after discussion, parents are not satisfied with
particular details of the Statement, they have the right to appeal
to the Special Educational Needs Tribunal.
Every school has the support of an educational psychologist - a
specialist in how children and young people develop and learn. They
will respond to requests when pupils show difficulties in learning,
emotional disturbance or problems of behaviour. Educational
psychologists will work with children only if parents agree.
Parents themselves may ask for their help through the school or
through the City of London's Family and Young
People's Service, tel 020 7332 1002 or
email.
