Assistance with travel costs
from home to school or college
The City of London runs the following scheme to assist with
your child's home to school travel costs.
- children rising five to aged seven where the nearest suitable
school is more than one and a half miles away by the shortest
walking route
- for those aged 7-11 where the nearest suitable school is more
than two miles away by the shortest walking route
- for those aged 11-16 where the nearest suitable school is more
than three miles away by the shortest walking route
- from September 2003, a new policy gives assistance to students
aged 16-19 attending maintained school or college to widen access
and participation in further education. Students aged 16 and 17
from 1 September 2006 are expected to make use of the free bus
facility provided by Transport for London unless the time taken to
attend school / college by bus is more than one hour per
journey and the school / college is the nearest most suitable in
terms of course provision.
- Students aged 18 from 1 September 2006 will be given a bus pass
unless the time taken to reach the school / college is longer than
one hour.
- Where students can demonstrate that the time taken for each
journey is more than one hour and the school / college is the
nearest most suitable in terms of course provision, a travelcard
will be issued.

In most cases a travel warrant is issued each term to be
exchanged for a travel pass at your preferred station. An identity
card issued by the travel operator may also be required.
Students may also be eligible to receive an
education maintenance allowance.
Applicants should be ordinarily resident within the Square
Mile.
