Freedom of Information Act

The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives people a general right of access to information held by or on behalf of public authorities. It should create better public understanding of:

  • how public authorities carry out their duties;
  • why they make their decisions;
  • and how they spend public money.

It will also promote a culture of openness and accountability across the public sector. Alternatively every public authority makes some information publicly available already, for example its annual reports, policy documents and financial information. It should describe this information in a publication scheme.

Healthy Schools

The government's Healthy Schools Initiative is a partnership between the Department for Children, Schools and Families and the Department of Health. Its National Healthy Schools Standard, launched in 1999, provides an accreditation process for education and health partnerships.

The City has joined forces with Hackney, Newham and Tower Hamlets to form the East London Healthy Schools Scheme, promoting better health and emotional wellbeing in children and working towards national accreditation. As part of its contribution to the East London Healthy Schools Scheme, the City of London has commissioned a teachers' and pupils' website, containing activities and information which support healthy schools work in the classroom.
