Diamond Jubilee Festival
Our Diamond Jubilee Festival, in partnership with Barnet
Council, takes place from 3pm to 10pm on Monday 4 June at
Golders Hill Park. Come and help celebrate 60 years of the
Queen on the throne. The event is free and includes live
music, children's entertainment, arts and crafts, sports, community
stalls and culminates with the lighting of the Queen's Diamond
Jubilee Beacon and fireworks. Bring a picnic (no BBQs please) but
refreshments will also be available. The adjacent Ivy
House will be open to the public in the afternoon.
This family fun event kicks off at 2.45pm with the unveiling of
a Diamond Jubilee Weathervane on top of the park bandstand. The
unveiling will be conducted by the Mayor of Barnet, the
Representative Deputy Lieutenant for Barnet and the Chairman of the
Hampstead Heath Management Committee.
Limited parking will be available in the area and visitors
are encouraged where possible to use public transport to reach the
park. It is served by bus routes 210 and 268 and is a short walk
from Golders Green Underground station.

Hampstead Heath is one of London’s most popular open spaces,
situated just six kilometres from Trafalgar Square. An island of
beautiful countryside, the magic of Hampstead Heath lies not only
in its rich wildlife and extensive sports and recreational
opportunities, but also in its proximity and accessibility to
millions of people. There is a zoo, an athletics track, an
education centre, extensive children's facilities,
three swimming ponds and a Lido.
The City of London Corporation has managed all of Hampstead
Heath, apart from the Kenwood Estate which is maintained by
English Heritage, since 1989.
Hampstead Heath is a registered charity (No. 803392). Any
donation, large or small, or legacy in a will would be a gift that
lasts forever, as it will be used to make long-term improvements on
Hampstead Heath. Please call 020 7332 3322.
Hampstead Heath's landscape is varied with woodland, meadows,
fragments of heathland and strings of ponds along its
valleys. With its origins in former countryside, long-established
features such as hedgerows and ancient trees provide links with the
past.
Hampstead Heath is managed from the main staff yards at
Parliament Hill (covering East Heath and the area up to Kenwood)
and Golders Hill (covering Hampstead Heath Extension, Sandy Heath,
the Hill Garden and Pergola and West Heath). The Superintendent and
administrative staff are based near the Heath at Highgate.

Major works necessary on Hampstead Heath dams and ponds
Over the next weeks and months the City of London Corporation
will be talking to Heath users and local residents about essential
and costly works which must take place on the pond-dams over the
next two or three years.
The works won’t just affect anglers and swimmers, but
nature-lovers and other Heath users too. They are needed to protect
local residents and services in the very rare but serious case of a
major flood.
We are following the best advice, and are now beginning to talk
to everybody and develop the necessary plans.

Hampstead Heath - have your say!
A website www.greenstat.org.uk has been set up to record
feedback and provide local residents with the opportunity to
comment on how open spaces nationwide are managed and maintained.
The City of London will be able to access this information and
compare results on Hampstead Heath with other open spaces up and
down the country.
We would very much welcome your involvement. Please visit
www.greenstat.org.uk and click on the London
region, where you will then see a list of organisations – please
chose ‘City of London’ which is conveniently located at the very
top of the page. You will then be asked to select whether you wish
to comment on the Service provided by City of London, or to comment
on a specific Open Space. If you select option 2 ‘Park or Open
Space’ you will be given a list of City of London open spaces to
comment on – please select ‘Hampstead Heath’ from this list and you
will then be taken through an online survey.
Hampstead Heath has received the Green Flag Award for over ten
consecutive years. The award scheme is managed by a consortium
comprising Keep Britain Tidy, BTCV and GreenSpace and is the
national benchmark against which the quality of public open space
is measured. More information about the award can be found on the
Green
Flag Award website.
Hampstead Heath has also received the Green Heritage Award
in recognition of achieving the required standard in managing sites
with historic importance.
