The Unitary Development Plan 2002,
adopted 9 April 2002, sets out the City of London’s strategy for
shaping the Square Mile. Its policies guide the City of London in
deciding planning applications, implementing traffic improvements
and enhancing the environment. Some policies in the UDP are
explained in more detail in supplementary planning advice and other
planning advice.
The UDP can be downloaded from this site.
The online version includes illustrative maps*, but please refer to
the printed version for the UDP's Proposals Maps.

Under the Planning & Compulsory
Purchase Act 2004 the UDP was due to lapse on 27 September 2007
unless the Secretary of State made an order to extend its policies.
Such an order has been made extending all but 29
policies.

The Mayor's
London Plan deals with London-wide planning.
The UDP and the London Plan together, form the development plan
for the City. Its policies are taken into account and should
particularly be referred to in those areas where the policies of
the UDP have lapsed.
The UDP (including the Proposals Maps) is
also available in interactive form through the
Planning Portal. This is a national
government website which provides a comprehensive source of
information on town planning.
Planning policy designations can be
searched using the
interactive
City map.
As a result of reforms to the planning
system introduced by the Government in 2004, the UDP will
eventually be replaced by a new type of plan called a Local
Development Framework (LDF).

City.
