Glossary

City fringe(s)

The City of London shares it boarders with seven London boroughs both north and south of the river (Lambeth, Southwark, City of Westminster, Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Camden, Islington). We refer to this area as the “City fringes”. The “City fringes” are among the most deprived boroughs in England.

City Fringe

The City Fringe refers to the area directly to the north and east of the City of London, which includes some of the most deprived communities in the country.  The City Fringe covers twelve wards in the boroughs of Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Camden and Islington that are nearest to the City of London.

Academies

Academies are publicly funded independent schools. The Academies Programme forms an integral part of the Government’s ‘Five Year Strategy for Children and Learners’. Sponsors help to design and equip the school buildings, as well as develop the Academy’s vision and structure. Additionally sponsors are a key influence on the governing and managing of the school.

VAT registrations & de-registrations statistics

Source: Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) which contains records of all businesses registered for VAT. VAT registrations and de-registrations are the best official guide to the pattern of business start-ups and closures. They are an indicator of the level of entrepreneurship and of the health of the business population within a given borough.

8-step system

The 8-step system gives advisors a structured approach to moving their job seekers towards job readiness.  The system has been adopted and implemented by Job Centre Plus (Ocean NDC outreach project), Way2Work (The London Muslim Centre) and a number of small local voluntary sector organisations.
