To find out more about individual City of London projects and
activities to combat unemployment and low skill levels in the City
fringes, please follow the links to the left.
The City of London Corporation is an unusually diverse
organisation that supports and promotes the City as the world
leader in international finance and business services. In
order for it to keep its status the City of London Corporation has
long recognised that the Square Mile, cannot prosper in isolation
from its neighbouring communities, which contain some of the UK’s
most disadvantaged boroughs.
Unemployment in the City fringes is higher than in the rest of
London. In February 2009, 15.1% of the working age population
in London were in receipt of unemployment-related benefits (e.g.
Jobseeker's Allowance Incapacity Benefits, etc) compared an average
of 17.4% across the City fringe boroughs. In the City fringe
boroughs of Tower Hamlets and Hackney, this figure rises above
20%. (
see source for this data).
In response to this clear mismatch between the demand for
skilled workers by City and City fringe employers and the inability
of local residents to access the job opportunities. The City of
London Corporation is delivering an extensive training and
employment programme to address this gap.
The City of London Corporation has agreed funding for 6 new
projects aimed at maximising access among residents of the City's
neighbouring boroughs to employment opportunities in the Square
Mile, which will be working with City and City fringe residents
from Autumn 2009. For further details on these projects please
see Raising aspirations projects
autumn 2009 and Training and employment
projects autumn 2009.
