Business and Sustainability


The City of London Corporation is committed to shaping the City as a sustainable place to do business, and to support businesses in adopting environmentally and socially sustainable work practices that make business sense.

We provide services that directly and indirectly support businesses in their striving to become sustainable - indirectly by, for example, encouraging research into sustainable finance and lobbying for improved and sustainable transport to and within the City; and we provide direct support through the services listed on this site.

City Action

City Action is a free volunteer matchmaking service for City-based companies and community organisations in the City and City fringe boroughs. Run by the City of London Corporation since 1998, City Action's free service provides City-based companies and local community organisations with opportunities to share skills and experiences.

City Environmental Forum

The City Environmental Forum is comprised of representatives from businesses in the City and beyond and offers the opportunity to discuss pertinent sustainability issues with peers. Forum members receive invitations to the quarterly meetings. They may also receive occasional emails relating to information that is deemed particularly interesting for them, as well as questions that Forum members ask to be put forward to their peers.

City Procurement Project

The City Procurement project offers City businesses advice and resources on how to embed sustainability throughout the supply chain. It is one of our Corporate Responsibility initiatives to help build the economic, environmental and social fabric of City fringe communities.

City Property Advisory Team

The City Property Advisory Team (CPAT) is part of the City of London Corporation’s economic development service. Our role is to help businesses find and retain premises in the City and City Fringe that most suit their needs. We also assist property investors and developers deliver their schemes to the market. Sustainability is a major priority for both occupiers and developers, and we aim to ensure businesses are up-to-date and engaged with City initiatives, and well informed about new legislation that may affect them.

Clean City Awards

Launched in 1994, the Clean City Awards Scheme aims to develop partnerships with City businesses, both large and small by raising the profile of responsible waste management and recognising and rewarding good practice by encouraging businesses to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.

Climate Change Adaptation

Whilst it is essential to continue to cut greenhouse gas emissions, it is also vital that we prepare our society and economy for life in a warming world. Our adaptation website and in particular, our Climate Change Adaptation Strategy provide information about the City of London’s actions to ensure business continuity despite a changing and more volatile climate. The strategy also includes a checklist for businesses to assess their readiness for the changing climate.

Corporate Responsibility

The City of London is committed to promoting Corporate Responsibility. The Square Mile is arguably the UK’s most prestigious and dynamic area, yet it is surrounded by some of the most deprived neighbourhoods in the country.
The City Corporation works closely with public, private and community sector bodies to ensure that the City and the City fringe boroughs are inclusive and thriving places to be.

Dragon Awards

The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards scheme celebrates Corporate Community Involvement across Greater London. The Dragon Awards are designed not only to improve the outlook for communities but also to foster team work and mutual respect between the businesses and their communities. The awards also demonstrate the benefits that businesses can gain from such involvement – notably in terms of development of new skills heightened creativity, new routes to market, and increased employee motivation and retention.

Fairtrade Steering Group

The City of London is recognised as a Fairtrade Zone since 2007. The Fairtrade Mark is an independent consumer label which appears on around 2,500 products as an independent guarantee that disadvantaged producers in the developing world are getting a better deal. One of the criteria for gaining Fairtrade Zone status is to establish a Fairtrade Steering Group. The group comprises businesses as well as third sector organisations and oversees activities going on throughout the year, as well as promoting Fairtrade-related activities in the Square Mile.

Heart of the City

Heart of the City provides free support to businesses that want to start or develop a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme. Building on the expertise and best practice of over 330 businesses, Heart of the City offers a uniquely collaborative programme of informal workshops, 1-1 mentoring from a CSR Manager within a more experienced company, networking opportunities and practical resources that enable businesses to develop a bespoke programme that suits their size, sector and experience.

Local Recruitment

Free advice and guidance on recruiting locally is available from our dedicated Employer Engagement Manager who can provide support to businesses that want to consider recruiting from the City’s neighbouring boroughs or setting up career days, work experience and other employability projects for City fringe residents.

London Accord

The London Accord presents a compendium of reports, written by a range of financial services firms, providing insight into environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues ranging from renewable energy to the price of carbon. The London Accord project is provided in partnership with Gresham College and Z/Yen.

Transport and Sustainability Forum

The Transport and Sustainability Forum is a sub-group of the City of London’s Local Strategic Partnership, The City Together (TCT). The Forum brings together key service providers, community representatives, user groups and any other relevant agencies. The Forum supports The City Together in achieving the objectives detailed in the City’s Community Strategy and also provides expertise for monitoring, reviewing and updating these objectives.
