Emissions trading scheme

The City of London played an instrumental role in the establishment of the UK Emissions Trading Scheme by commissioning research on the trading of emission permits and establishing the Emissions Trading Group (ETG).

In March 2000 the ETG submitted outline proposals on Emissions Trading Scheme to the Government, who committed five years of funding towards establishing the scheme.

Launched in August 2001, the UK Emissions Trading Scheme is the world’s first economy-wide greenhouse gas trading scheme. Many companies have since signed up to the scheme, which will lead, to the delivery of over four million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent emission savings by the final year of the scheme.

The City of London has now published research which looks at the business opportunities offered by emissions trading, ascertains how the market has developed and identifies the next generation of trading opportunities. The report anticipates the next stage of development - the promotion of the retail emissions sector - in order to consolidate and maintain London’s lead at the centre of the emissions trading industry.
