The City of London is the statutory authority for the naming and
numbering of streets and buildings in the
Square Mile. The
appropriate naming and numbering of streets and buildings is
important for identifying property in general, record keeping (eg
responses to emergencies by ambulance, police and fire services.
Furthermore, all addresses are recorded in the NLPG (National Land
and Property Gazetteer) in an official and consistent format.
Thus, applications relating to the naming and numbering of
streets and buildings must be sent to the City of London to obtain
authorisation prior to their use, including the use of an address
for marketing purposes.

buildings, which provides detailed advice on the naming and
numbering of streets and buildings.
When making an application please provide the following
information:
- Confirmation of permission by the owner of the property to make
an application relating to the naming and numbering of streets and
buildings.
- An explanation of the proposal, including the present address
details. If the application comprises a street name or a building
name, an explanation into the origin of the name must be
included.
- A ground floor plan indicating all entrances to the
property.
- Contact details for correspondence.
