Guide to the Barbican Estate


Cityscape The Barbican Estate was officially opened in 1969. Designed and built for City professionals, the dramatic architecture was the work of Chamberlain, Powell and Bon. Today it houses more than 4,000 people in 21 separate blocks.

The estate covers an area of 40 acres (15.2 ha). To the south stands St Paul’s Cathedral and to the west lies Smithfield Market and St Bartholomew’s Hospital. Moorgate is to the east, and Old Street lies to the north. The estate is within easy walking distance of Moorgate and Barbican underground stations, with St Paul's and Liverpool Street stations close by.

There are 140 different types of apartment, ranging from studio flats and two or three bedroom maisonette-style dwellings to five bedroom penthouses. The first flats were made available for sale in 1981. For current prices please contact one of the estate agents.

Quality of service within the estate is a priority. Service charges include cleaning of shared areas, 24-hour staff cover, background heating and waste collection. Residents have access to private gardens and the superb Barbican Centre .

The Barbican Residential Committee determines policy on the Barbican Estate. The Committee has 19 members, ten of whom are non-resident appointed by the Court of Common Council with speaking and voting rights. The other nine are members of the City of London made up of three members nominated by the Deputy of each of the three wards (Aldersgate, Cripplegate Within and Cripplegate Without) one of whom from each ward may be a non-resident of the estate. The resident members have speaking and some voting rights.
