Smithfield Nocturne - Saturday 7
June 2008
Introduction
The concept for The Smithfield Nocturne was to create a world class
cycling event in the centre of London; a cycling event that would
appeal to cyclists as well as non cyclists, involve local
businesses and blend into the famous streets in the heart of the
capital. On 23 June 2007 the first Smithfield Nocturne achieved
these objectives bringing to life the streets of central London
creating a new style of cycling event in the UK. The inaugural
event attracted 5000 spectators and was recognised for innovation
winning a Visit London Sports Tourism Award. In 2008 the event is
back on your doorstep at Smithfield Market on Saturday 7 June.
The Event
The Nocturne is a unique cycling event with a festival atmosphere
incorporating the bars and restaurants along the course as well as
providing a variety of other attractions, music and entertainment.
The racing takes place on a 1km course around Smithfield Market and
the race programme is packed with different races ranging from the
Elite Criterium, featuring top British and international pro
riders, to the hugely popular folding bike race where suited London
commuters test their racing skills. High speed and intense racing
is enhanced by the darkness later in the evening providing a unique
nocturnal visual spectacle.
In 2008 new races include the City of London Team Challenge and
an Inter Schools Youth Competition. Some races including the
Folding Bike Race are open to the public and can be entered via the
website. The Nocturne is ideal for City of London Residents to
experience and join in this great event.

covers some of London's favourite sights. The run started at
