What is Libraries Online?

Libraries Online offers more computer terminals with free access to,

  • Internet
  • Scanning
  • Web-based email accounts
  • Jaws and Zoomtext software to help people with sight difficulties
  • Electronic resources (including CD Roms)
  • Library catalogue (OPAC)

The latest Microsoft Office software for word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentations will be available at the lending libraries. A webcam will also be available at the Barbican Library.

Access to Libraries Online is free, you only pay for print-outs and floppy disks.

Who can use Libraries Online?

All visitors to our libraries are welcome to use the service, you do not need to be a library member.

How do I book?

Computer access is available up to one hour at a time and you can book up to 24 hours in advance. Any work station not currently in use may be booked for immediate use. Demand is likely to be high so you are advised to contact the library closest to you to check in advance whether you need to book. Contact the library closest to you to find out more.

Here to help

  • Help guides for using the internet, software and computer equipment.
  • Trained staff to assist

Printouts

Printing is available at all libraries for the following:

  • Black and white printouts 10p per page
  • Colour printouts 30p per page

Retaining your work

If you wish to retain your work, you can save it to a floppy disk. These are available to purchase from the library at 40p per disk, or you may use your own. Information will not be retained on the hard drive as the computers will be rebooted at the end of each session, erasing data.

Fully accessible computers

Each library will have at least one computer work station offering wheelchair access and will be equipped with Zoomtext screen magnification and Jaws text to speech software for people with sight difficulties.

  • Screen magnifier (Zoomtext)
Use this to make the words and pictures on the screen as large as you want.
  • Text to speech software (Jaws)
Use this with the headphones to have words spelt out loud and the sentences or pages you have written read back to you. This software can be used with the word processing application on this PC. You will be able to hear what you are typing as you do your work through a screen voice. When you are using the internet you can have the text on the screen read out loud. This makes it easier to find the information you want when doing a subject search.
