This service provides private study copies for users, and
preservation surrogates for use in place of original material. The
process used is determined by the nature of the item to be copied
as well as users' requirements. Staff in the reading room are able
to advise on the most appropriate type of copy for access, as well
as the charges involved. Application forms for the different
copying services are available in the reading room and payments are
made at the reception desk. Price lists are available on our
information leaflets page.
There are self-service microfilm
reader/printers and a self-service photocopier for non-archive
material in the reference room. Some original documents can be
photocopied, depending on their form and condition, but this is
always done by staff. If you are unable to make your order in
person, we are able to arrange copies by post (an additional
handling charge is payable for this service).
Please contact the enquiry team for further details. Orders
placed with the reprographics unit will usually be processed within
four working days.
The reprographics unit is equipped for some of
the most up-to-date copying equipment and the work is done
in-house. One of our chief concerns is to protect our holdings from
damage and certain methods of reproduction expose items to less
risk than others.
Scanning
The primary function of digital imaging (scanning) is to
increase access to LMA collections - the unit uses a digital camera
designed to reduce the impact of light and heat and so more
documents can be copied this way than by using a photocopier. Scans
are usually printed for the user to take away for private study,
but we can provide scans on disk or CD-Rom.
Microfilming
Preservation surrogates for use at LMA are
produced by microfilming documents and the archive maintains high
standards in all areas of microfilm production, from selection,
handling and preparation of material, to the technical
specifications for equipment, targets and film copies. The unit
works to BS ISO Standards and produces master copy and user copy
films on 35mm silver halide film.
We also offer a commercial microfilming service for other
organisations. LMA has a fully-equipped microfilm unit and carries
out all processing and copying on-site. Staff are trained to the
highest standards to ensure that original material is protected
throughout the filming process. Film is produced on 35mm roll film.
The department can also create microfilm jackets (microfiche), but
copying of these is organised externally. While the order is being
dealt with, LMA can offer strongroom storage to BS 5454 standards
and a high level of security. For more information tel 020 7332
