It is the job of Cleansing Services to ensure during times of
freezing conditions and snowfall, the free, safe passage of
vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the City and to mimimise
the disruption caused to City residents, workers and visitors.
In the event of snowfall the priorities of
Cleansing Services will be
-
Carriageways including bus routes and cycle
lanes on main through routes, to maintain a safe passage for
traffic. Carriageways around St. Bartholomew's Hospital, police and
fire stations
-
Clearance of footways to hospitals, police
and fire stations, bus stops, schools and nurseries, Guildhall and
steps leading to highwalks

Secondary carriageways
-
Two metre paths along footways (firstly on
one side of the street) radiating out from stations along main
roads and including crossings

The remaining carriageways and footways will
then be dealt with
At the time of severe weather conditions the
sweeping of streets and removal of litter will not be a priority
for Cleansing Services. The safe passage of traffic and pedestrians
will be the overriding priority.
Cleansing Services have produced a Winter
Service Operational Plan to deal with extreme weather conditions.
Regular weather reports are received from the Meterological Office,
these are reviewed on a daily basis and when extreme weather
conditions are expected the Winter Service Operational Plan comes
into effect.
