Roads - snow clearance

It is the job of Cleansing Services to ensure during times of freezing conditions and snowfall, the free, safe passage of vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the City and to mimimise the disruption caused to City residents, workers and visitors.

In the event of snowfall the priorities of Cleansing Services will be

  • Carriageways including bus routes and cycle lanes on main through routes, to maintain a safe passage for traffic. Carriageways around St. Bartholomew's Hospital, police and fire stations
  • Clearance of footways to hospitals, police and fire stations, bus stops, schools and nurseries, Guildhall and steps leading to highwalks
  • Secondary carriageways
  • Two metre paths along footways (firstly on one side of the street) radiating out from stations along main roads and including crossings
  • The remaining carriageways and footways will then be dealt with

At the time of severe weather conditions the sweeping of streets and removal of litter will not be a priority for Cleansing Services. The safe passage of traffic and pedestrians will be the overriding priority.

Cleansing Services have produced a Winter Service Operational Plan to deal with extreme weather conditions. Regular weather reports are received from the Meterological Office, these are reviewed on a daily basis and when extreme weather conditions are expected the Winter Service Operational Plan comes into effect.

If you would like to know more about the Winter Service Operational Plan, please contact Cleansing Services on 020 7606 3110 extension 2212 or email us at Cleansing.StreetCleansing@cityoflondon.gov.uk.
