The City's streets, which have been
voted the cleanest in Britain by the British Cleaning Council,
are kept that way by one of the most comprehensive and
responsive public cleansing operations in the world. The City
of London offers a 24 hours a day, 364 days a year service
covering street sweeping, waste collection, technical advice
on waste management and the operation of the most modern waste
transfer station in the South East of England.

Drainage -
help and advice
- The local authority provides help and advice on highway
drainage, land drainage or private drainage and may arrange for
clearance of a blocked drain.

Flyposting -
reporting and removal
- The local authority is responsible for the removal of illegally
posted advertisements, leaflets etc. on both council and privately
owned property in the area. Each council provides information on
how to report instances of flyposting.

Graffiti
- reporting and removal
- Provision of a facility whereby members of the public cab
report graffiti to the council. The council will arrange for the
removal of the graffiti in a timescale determined by the content
with the highest priority likely to be given to graffiti which is
racist or offensive in some other way.

Public toilets
- Provision of public conveniences. Where these are provided the
local authority is also responsible for maintenance and cleaning of
the facilities.

Refuse - litter
bins
- Litter in a public place is unsightly, dangerous to animals,
and an offence. The average fine for littering is around £95, but
can be up to £2,500. The council provide and maintain bins to try
and prevent the depositing of litter in public places and arrange
for the bins to be emptied on a regular basis.

- The local authority street cleansing programme provides a
frequent cleansing of streets, gullies, car parks, public
conveniences and other public areas to remove litter, build up of
leaves or any other conditions which could pose a risk to public
health and safety.

Vandalism
- prevention measures
- The local authority implement measures aimed at preventing
vandalism within the area (CCTV, wardens, improved street lighting
etc.) and provide advice and information on measures which can be
taken by individuals to deter vandals and how to notify the council
about incidents of vandalism. Where the vandalism has taken place
on public property the council will carry out
repairs.
