Public Toilets

With five attended toilets, ten automatic toilets and 50 community toilets the City of London probably has the highest concentration of toilets in one square mile in the country.

All toilet provision in the City of London can be viewed on an interactive toilet map.

Attended toilets

Our attended toilets are staffed through their opening hours. Public Convenience Opening Times (PDF, 5kb).  This enables us to provide quality, clean and, most importantly, safe facilities for all users.

The cost of providing public toilets is high and the City of London is under the same financial constraints as all other local authorities.  For many years we provided a free service while other local authorities were either closing their facilities or introducing charges.

Unfortunately we reached the point at which if we are to continue to provide attended toilets at Tower Hill and Paternoster Square, we must charge an admission fee of 50p for all users. (RADAR key holders are the only exception). Change machines are available.

Locations

  • Paternoster – in the Paternoster Square development near to St Paul’s Chapter House
  • Tower Hill - in the Tower Place development opposite the Tower of London
  • Royal Exchange - in the subway outside the entrance to Royal Exchange
  • Smithfield - on the roundabout at West Smithfield
  • Eastcheap - in the island at the junction of Eastcheap, King William Street and Gracechurch Street

There are three further toilets, one or more of which may be operational on a part time basis or during special events such as Lord Mayors Show. These toilets are located at:

  • Aldgate - in the subway at the southern end of Middlesex Street, junction with St Botolph Street. This convenience, although normally closed is open on Sundays for the market in Middlesex Street.
  • Bishopsgate - on the corner of Bishopsgate and Middlesex Street. This convenience, although normally closed is open on Sundays for the market in Middlesex Street.
  • Blackfriars - on the riverside walkway at the bottom of the steps to Blackfriars Road Bridge.  (Please note: Open April - September only. Monday - Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm, Saturday & Sunday 9.00 - 5.00pm).
