Local Head Teacher to lead City of London KPMG Academy

The City of London KPMG Academy has appointed the Headteacher of a local Hackney secondary school as its first Principal.

Mark Emmerson, who currently leads Stoke Newington School, will take up his post on a part time basis from January before becoming full time from Easter. The new school is planned for Homerton and will open in September 2009.

He will join the Academy Planning Team at an exciting time as the new building starts to take shape and detailed plans are developed for the staffing and curriculum structure.

Commenting on his appointment Mark Emmerson said:

“I am really excited to be involved at the beginning of a new Academy and establishing a culture of high aspiration and excellence that will transform the educational and economic landscape in this part of Hackney for generations. I have hugely enjoyed my time at Stoke Newington and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the pupils and staff for their hard work and support over the years. Whilst I am sad to be leaving, I am delighted to be staying in Hackney as part of the education community and I know that the school will continue to go from strength to strength.”

His immediate priorities will be to work with the sponsors to refine the educational vision and communicate with the local community.

In particular this will involve meeting with potential students and their parents who are currently in local primary schools.

Catherine McGuinness, the Chair designate of the Academy Board and a Common Councillor of the City of London Corporation, said:

“We are really pleased with Mark’s appointment. He will be a tremendous asset to the Academy and brings with him a high reputation as a successful Hackney Headteacher”.

Ian Barlow, KPMG senior partner for London, explained:

“The Academy will aim to provide the very highest standards of education and develop in young people a range of skills to equip them for their future and the world of work. Mark’s appointment is a key step closer in realising that ambition.”

Notes to editors

  1. The Academy, which will open for the first 180 eleven year olds in September 2009, has a specialism in business and financial services but includes the full range of subjects that would be in any successful school. It is sponsored by the City of London Corporation and KPMG.
  2. Mark Emmerson has been Headteacher at Stoke Newington School since 2000 and OFSTED inspectors described Mark as providing ‘Very good leadership … with a very strong focus on raising standards and students’ achievements.’

Since May 2007, while continuing as Headteacher at Stoke Newington School, he has also been working part time for the Learning Trust which runs education in Hackney, on the development of Hackney-wide strategy on student behaviour. The Governing Body will appoint a new Headteacher.
