Christmas Shopping at City of London Food Markets

Christmas shoppers avoiding plastic-wrapped supermarket meat and fish should look no further than central London for their fresh, quality, last-minute goods.

Smithfield meat market and Billingsgate fish market will open for extra Christmas trading this weekend, 22-23 December. Bargain hunters who have forgotten to buy a turkey or have left it till the eleventh-hour, will be given a last chance on Christmas Eve at the annual turkey auction being held at Smithfield market at 10.30am.

Customers are advised to wake up early this weekend to catch Smithfield and Billingsgate market in full swing.

Smithfield is the largest meat market in Britain. Produce includes meat, poultry, cheese and pies. Food is usually purchased wholesale by butchers, restaurant owners and caterers, however the public are welcome for smaller purchases. The market hosts 66 stands and 67 offices.

Billingsgate market will open for extra trading on Sunday 23 and Monday 24 December, however a restricted service will be in place. The market starts at 5.00am and ends at 8.00am. Billingsgate is the UK’s biggest inland fish market holding 98 stands, 30 shops and 79 offices.

Parking is available at Smithfield market for £1.50 and note the congestion charge does not apply on the weekend. Smithfield market is a two minute walk from Barbican tube station. Located at Canary Wharf, Billingsgate market can be accessed by Docklands Light Railway or Tube.
