New City of London Sheriffs to take office

Friday 28 September 2007, from midday
Guildhall Yard, London EC2

There will be a short opportunity to photograph the new Sheriffs in the Guildhall Yard at approximately 12.30pm on Friday 28 September.  Please arrive by 12.15pm.

The new Sheriffs of the City of London, Alderman Ian Luder (Castle Baynard) and Alderman Michael Bear (Portsoken) will be admitted to office at the Guildhall on Friday 28 September.

Elected in June, the two Sheriffs will take over from Sheriff Alderman David Lewis and Sheriff Richard Regan three days before the new Lord Mayor of the City is elected on Monday 1 October.

The office of Sheriff dates back to the Middle Ages and is of long-standing importance in the government of the City of London which now focuses on promoting and sustaining the Square Mile business district. The Sheriffs’ role includes attending the Lord Mayor in carrying out official duties, attending the sessions at the Central Criminal Court in the Old Bailey and presenting petitions from the City to Parliament at the Bar at the House of Commons.

The admission of Sheriffs takes place before the election of the new Lord Mayor (who will take office on 9 November) as the Sheriffs take a key role in supervising the election.
