New water mains for Wall area, City of London
Essential works will start in the Wall area of City of London
next month to replace ageing water mains, which are susceptible to
leaks and bursts.
Residents can find out more at a Thames Water drop-in session on
Wednesday 12 December. The company’s mobile customer unit
will be located outside Liverpool Street Station between 4.00pm and
7.00pm.
Thames Water is investing £4.3 million on the improvements which
will involve replacing over 11 kilometres of pipes up to 150 years
old. The original cast iron mains will be replaced with new plastic
pipes that are more durable and flexible. Work begins on
Monday 7 January 2008 and is due to take 20 months.
Works will be carried out in the EC2 and EC3 postcode areas,
roughly bounded by Bishopgate, Cornhill, Princes Street, Moorgate,
Sun Street and Liverpool Street Station.
Louis Quartly, Project Manager for Thames Water, said:
“Thames Water is committed to reducing leakage and we can only
do this effectively by systematically replacing all of London’s
leakiest, cast iron pipes that can date back to the Victorian era.
Due to the size of the project this won’t happen overnight, but
we’re on target to replace more than 1,000 miles of mains by
2010.
“This work is needed to meet capital’s rising demand for water,
and deal with the increasing pressure that climate change is
putting on our water resources.
“We appreciate that work of this nature does bring inevitable
disruption, but this huge investment will bring benefits to the
area for years to come, as we should not have to carry out repairs
here in the future.
“We will minimise disruption as far as possible by using the
latest construction techniques which reduce the need to dig long
trenches. We are also working closely with City of London
Corporation to reduce the impact on traffic.”
