Lord Mayor makes annual visit to Smithfield
Yesterday morning (11 June) Lord Mayor David Lewis made the
annual Mayoral visit to Smithfield Market. He was escorted around
the market by Mr Greg Lawrence, Chairman of the Smithfield Tenants
Association (SMTA) and was introduced to the traders and tenants.
Mr Lawrence subsequently hosted a breakfast for the Lord Mayor at
Butchers Hall.
Lord Mayor David Lewis, who owns a farm in Cothi Valley, Wales,
is a lamb expert himself. He was particularly delighted to meet and
talk with meat traders.
As Smithfield is now in the midst of the new Food Standards
Agency inspection, Lord Mayor David Lewis said:
"I wish the Market and all SMTA members the best success. As I
am sure the inspectors are finding, Smithfield is a remarkable
institution."
When the Lord Mayor was asked what is the best lamb in the
world, he said:
"I am proud to say it’s definitely my own Welsh lamb – they were
served to the Prime Minister at the Lord Mayor’s banquet last year
and it will be great to see them at Smithfield one day."
