Mossbourne Community Academy students targeted in a bid to
promote careers in the City of London
With a high proportion of local schoolchildren still unaware of
what a career in the City involves, and older students uncertain
about how to access the City job market, the City of London
Corporation is tackling barriers to employment head-on by targeting
Hackney schools with schemes to give students early access to
leading City firms.
The City 4 A Day scheme, designed to introduce 12-13 year old
pupils to the City, recently gave the Mossbourne Community Academy
students the unique chance to find out about working life inside
leading City firms for a day: offering access to junior and senior
level employees, as well opportunities to take part in practical
exercises to demonstrate what a career in the City involves.
On Thursday 20 March 2008, 17 students from Mossbourne Community
Academy, Hackney, visited international Bank WestLB and leading
financial, regulatory and political communications agency Finsbury
Limited, following a tour of the City of London Marketing
Suite.
During the day, the 17 students were given an introduction into
careers in the City before completing a quiz about their existing
knowledge and perceptions of the Square Mile. They also took part
in a series of team-building, skill tasks and Q+A sessions, as well
as tours of both WestLB and Finsbury Limited.
David Pack, Partnerships Manager at the City of London
Corporation, says: “We know from experience that a lot of Hackney
students have misconceptions about what working in the City really
involves – and it’s vital that these are tackled. Our programmes
aim to open young students’ eyes to the opportunities that are
right on their doorstep – and equally give firms access to the
ambitious pupils who are all around them.”

residents to the career opportunities within the financial and
business services sectors.
The City of London Corporation is the “business authority for
the business district” and supports the international financial
services industry based in the UK, with its heart in the Square
