City of London Corporation elects new Policy Chairman
The City of London Corporation has today (Thursday 17 April)
elected Stuart Fraser as the new Chairman of the Policy &
Resources Committee.
Mr Fraser, already an elected member of the City’s Common
Council, will lead the committee in its development of policies to
support the financial services industry in London and the UK, and
to help the City provide first-class local authority services to
the Square Mile’s residents, workers and visitors. Mr Fraser will
also help steer the City’s work contributing to wider London and
the UK through a wide range of other services and programmes.
Since 2003, Mr Fraser has served as Deputy Chairman of the
Policy and Resources Committee. He has represented Coleman Street
Ward in the City of London since 1993.
Mr Fraser said: "The City of London is a major engine of the UK
economy and, as a geographic area, is a unique combination of the
modern and the ancient. The Square Mile’s prosperity and success
over the long-term derives in part from it being uniquely looked
after by a unique local authority, the City of London
Corporation.
"Although the financial services sector worldwide is currently a
state of extreme flux, the foundations of our success remain
strong: openness, flexibility and access to a world-class pool of
skills.
"It has never been more important for the City Corporation to
support this industry and my colleagues and I will work to ensure
that the right policies and resources are in place to do so, and to
address the needs of our 9,000 residents and 340,000 City workers,
as well as the thousands of visitors who come here every year.
"Liaising closely with the UK Government, the Mayor of London
and the GLA, City residents, Square Mile businesses and Brussels is
an essential part of the Policy Chairman’s role, and I am fortunate
to build on the excellent work of my predecessor Michael
Snyder."
The outgoing Chairman, Michael Snyder, held the position from
2003 and is Senior Partner of chartered accountants firm Kingston
Smith. The post is term-limited to five years.
