City policy chief details plans for 2012 - the 'City Corporation's biggest year for a generation’

Stuart Fraser, the City of London Corporation’s elected Policy Chairman, announced today (Thursday) a change in the line-up for the key leadership of the Square Mile authority, ahead of ‘the City’s biggest year for a generation.’

Stuart Fraser, 65, who has served as the Chairman of City Corporation’s lead Policy and Resources Committee for 4 years, announced today he would move to the Deputy Policy Chairman’s role next spring, as part of a realignment of City Corporation leadership.

‘2012 could be one of the City Corporation’s biggest years of work for a generation and I want to help make sure we have the right resources in place for that: I will become Deputy Policy Chairman from April and this will allow us to double up the experience and manage the big issues in the best way.

‘World financial events, the inevitable work in Brussels and overseas, the Olympics and Jubilee, and our commitment to do even more for SME and high-tech growth in London means that the challenges will be very onerous.

‘Frankly, after 44 years in the markets and 4 years as Policy Chairman, my wife Laura would like me to take a Sunday off now and then, so I think it’s sensible to plan a proper overlap – and enjoy what will be a very special year for London.’

The Policy Chairman is elected annually – but limited to a maximum of five years. Any Chairman standing down has the right to stand as Deputy (unopposed), a rule that Chairman Fraser said he was using to help mix his experience alongside a new Chairman as the City moved through 2012 and beyond.

Chairman Fraser said the next Lord Mayor, Alderman David Wootton, who takes office on Friday, was a key part of the City Corporation’s ‘Big team for a big year’.

‘Business and financial services are facing major challenges – witness the events in Greece and now Italy;  taken with the 2012 celebrations, the City Corporation will have a lot on its plate.’
