Elections and wards

The geographical Square Mile consists of 25 wards, each with a number of elected councillors (known as 'Common Councilmen' or Members), one of whom is an elected Alderman and part of the pool of candidates for Lord Mayor. Historically, elected as independents, and without political party backing, candidates have to establish very direct contacts with voters.

Following the City of London (Ward Elections) Act 2002, the unique concentration of businesses in the Square Mile was reflected in the reformed voting system, which gives votes to both firmsĀ and residents, in a carefully balanced way.
