Aldermanic Election - Ward of Broad Street
Following the resignation of Sir David Lewis, who will not be standing for re-election, a Notice of Vacancy (14kb) is published. Potential candidates who were not already Justices of the Peace, had until 12 March 2013 to write to the Town Clerk confirming their intention to apply to the Lord Chancellor's Advisory Committee. Following this date, three letters were received. The election process was put on hold while such applications were made.
On 16 May 2013 an Act of Common Council was passed that changed the qualification requirements for candidates at Aldermanic elections. Potential candidates no longer have to be Justices of the Peace or approved to be Justices of the Peace and there is a new alternative qualification. There is no reason for the election to be delayed and the arrangements are being made to run this election.
The date of the election will be displayed here in due course.

Standing as a candidate for the Court of Common Council
The Court of Common Council is the decision making body of the City of London Corporation. It is made up of elected Members from the City's 25 wards. Each ward elects Members - one Alderman and a number of Common Councilmen - to represent them. These Members cover a wide range of professions and City interests and are elected on a non-party political basis.
Common Councilman
City wide elections are held every four years to elect the 100 Common Councilmen that sit on the Court of Common Council. The next scheduled elections will take place in March 2017
A by-election may occur before then if a vacancy arises, for example, by the resignation or death of a current Member.
In the event of an election, a Notice of Election will be shown on this webpage; on the relevant ward notice board; and sent to every eligible registered voter of the particular ward.
Persons who wish to stand as a candidate for the office of Common Councilman must fulfil certain criteria, details of which are available below.

Aldermen
Aldermen are elected for a six year term, however, they may offer themselves for re-election within that time, causing an election to be held. Conventionally an Alderman retires upon reaching the age of 70. Unlike elections for Common Councilmen, Aldermen are not elected on a City wide basis at the same time.
Persons who wish to stand as a candidate for the office of Alderman must fulfil certain criteria, including a requirement to sit as a Justice of the Peace at the City of London Magistrate's Court. If you are not an existing Justice of the Peace, you will need to apply to become approved as one when an election is called. Further details on the eligibility criteria of an Alderman are available below.
Potential Aldermanic candidates are encouraged to meet with the voluntary Pre-election Advisory Panel, details of which are included below.
