The City is at the heart of the UK-based international financial and related services industry, and the City of London Corporation works to promote and enhance the City's status and effectiveness as a world-leading global centre for finance and business.
Supporting City competitiveness
We aim to support the competitiveness and growth of City business, engaging closely with business and policy-makers on issues affecting the business environment, economic growth and the global competitiveness of UK-based financial, professional and related business services, to secure the best market, fiscal, regulatory and infrastructural environment in which innovation and enterprise can flourish.
Issues that have an impact on City businesses are a key focus for our work, and these include:
- regulation, including corporate governance and the development of the UK’s regulatory architecture
- the availability of skills and access to talent
- infrastructure and transport
- funding for small and medium-sized enterprises and the challenges and opportunities for financial services in financing economic growth
- the development of newer areas of business such as Islamic finance and the carbon markets
Together with partner organisation TheCityUK, we run the International Regulatory Strategy Group (IRSG) which contributes to the shaping of the international regulatory regime, at global, regional and national levels, to promote open, competitive and fair capital markets globally, supporting sustainable economic growth.
We also recognise that the Square Mile plays a critical role in supporting the prosperity of the whole of London and the UK.
We work hard to enhance capacity of the wider London region and especially our neighbouring communities, through our extensive regeneration initiatives and corporate responsibility programmes aimed at tackling economic, social and environmental issues. Through this, we aim to reinforce the competitiveness of London by generating more sustainable economic activity.
