Future of Tobacco Control Survey
As part of the Department of Health’s open consultation on the Future of Tobacco Control, the City of London Corporation and City & Hackney Teaching Primary Care Trust would like to gather the views of City workers and residents to feed into its consultation response. Your views are extremely important to us and will help to shape England’s long-term tobacco control strategy.

Reducing smoking rates and health inequalities caused by smoking
- Approximately, 22% of people in England currently smoke.
- Smoking is the main cause of preventable illness and premature death in England. It causes around 87,000            deaths per year.
- According to the National Institute of Clinical Excellence (NICE), tobacco use is the primary reason for the gap in healthy life expectancy between rich and poor.

Protecting children and young people from smoking

Getting rid of cigarette vending machines
  Increasing the price of cigarettes
  Getting rid of 10-pack cigarettes
Selling cigarettes in plain packs, with no branding
Protection of people from second-hand smoke
- Smoke-free legislation was introduced throughout England and the UK in July 2007, restricting where people are allowed to smoke.
- The legislation protects hospitality workers and the public from the 69 cancer causing and 4,000 other chemicals present in tobacco smoke.
- There is no safe level of exposure from secondhand smoke and annually it causes 12,000 deaths in the UK.
