Sporting Stance:
the City and the 2012 Games
In 2012, the capital will host the greatest sporting event on earth. Viewed by millions, the Games will provide a unique opportunity to showcase to the world all that London has to offer.
With the spotlight on the capital, the City of London Corporation recognises the many benefits the Games will bring and, in partnership with others, is working hard to ensure their success.
Ideas for activities, schemes and initiatives are currently being discussed and a strategic framework has been developed to help maximise these benefits for the City’s many stakeholders. These include our visitors.
Located at the gateway to the boroughs hosting the Games, the City is growing its already world-class visitor welcome. Events complementing the official ceremonies and those that form part of London’s four-year Cultural Olympiad are just a part of this; as are schemes such as the City’s volunteer SquareMilers, on-street guides that, at large-scale events, help visitors get the most out of the City.
Already, the City has hosted the official 2012 Roadshow – Get Set London – which took place in March in Leadenhall Market, and a full-scale event at St Paul’s Cathedral to welcome the Olympic flame in the Beijing Torch Relay. There promises to be a good deal more to come too.
When “ownership” of the Games passes to London on Saturday 24 August and the Cultural Olympiad begins, the City of London Festival and other City arts partners celebrate with Out of the Blocks – a musical and dance extravaganza on the steps of St Paul’s and in Paternoster Square. On Wednesday 17 September, when the Paralympics are handed over to London, the Festival is celebrating again – this time with the unveiling of the fourth and final mural at The Monument and a youth music performance. For details of both events, check out the City of London Festival website at www.colf.org
The message is watch this space. As the City gears up for the Games, more events and schemes will come on stream; as will the visitor services initiatives to support them.
The 2012 Games promise lasting legacies for London – such as improvements to its transport infrastructure, regeneration and job and skills opportunities for Londoners. All are embraced by the City; and the City of London Corporation is fully committed to providing the support required to maximise their potential.
