Paralympic Torch Relay to visit the Square Mile

16 August 2012

The Paralympic Torch will travel through the City of London as part of a 24-hour Relay on 29 August – the day of the Paralympic Opening Ceremony at the Olympic Stadium.

The Torch will enter the Square Mile from Westminster at approximately 13:27 before passing into Tower Hamlets at 14:03. The Flame will cross the Thames over Tower Bridge – which will have a spectacular Agitos (the symbol of the Paralympic Games) on display – after it has left the City.

Seb Coe, LOCOG Chair, said:

“We have created a unique identity for the Paralympic Torch Relay which will be a celebration of courage, determination, inspiration and equality that every Paralympian represents.”

Alderman David Wootton, Lord Mayor of the City of London, added:

“The City is honoured to be welcoming the Paralympic Torch Relay and look forward to witnessing the athletes’ inspirational deeds once the Games begin.”

The 24-hour relay - presented by BT, Lloyds TSB and Sainsbury’s - will see the Paralympic Flame carried 87 miles by 580 Torchbearers, working in teams of five, from Stoke Mandeville  to London. It will travel through some of the communities of Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire, before visiting all six host boroughs and a number of internationally recognisable London landmarks.
